Our poor Jack has been sick for two weeks. It started with a stomach thing, then four days of non-stop headache, and congestion. The doctor said it was Enterovirus, nothing we can do about it. So we tried to wait it out. But seven days in he woke up in the night with pain in both ears. Yep, now add double ear infections to the list of troubles. Then the coughing and fever started. Ughh, the fever. Once it started it went straight up to 103.5 and never dropped below 101.5, sometimes reaching over 104. He was MISERABLE. I'm talking about 10 days of laying on the couch, spontaneous naps, not even playing, MIS-ER-A-BLE.
On Sunday evening he complained of side pain and that was the final straw, we took him to the emergency room. Except guess what, the pain stopped by the time we got there. Of course. So they examined him and again determined it was just a virus, too bad about the high fever, just wait it out.
And I wish he would have gotten better, but he didn't. He continued to complain on and off about the side pain. He'd cry/moan for hours here and there, but Tuesday he cried for 6 hours straight and then added that his chest hurt. We headed back to the doctor's office and this time they sent us up to Primary Children's Hospital.
I think we got there when he was at his very worst. His fever was 104.7 and his blood oxygen level was only at 89-90 (88 or below requires oxygen). After a chest x-ray and another test, they determined it was Mycoplasma Pneumonia. Normally this is referred to as walking pneumonia because people don't realize they have it until they are bothered by a cough for weeks, but Jack has had a really bad case probably because it immediately followed the first virus. We were just so happy to finally be able to treat his symptoms to get him well again.
He was put on a strong antibiotic and after only 8 hours he totally perked up. His fever was gone!
We are SO happy to see this bright little face again!
It has been a really rough couple of weeks. At one point in the first week every one of the kids got the stomach part of the virus. Wesley even threw up on the floor at the Dollar Store, Emily said it doesn't get more white trash than that :) But I have never seen Jack as sick as this and it has been heartbreaking. We're thrilled things will be getting back to normal around here.
